Streakiness

A priest put this question to a class of children: “If all the good people were blue and all the bad people were pink, what colour would you be?”   Little Johnny replied, “Father, I’d be streaky!”   So, would the priest. So, would the bishops, the pope, and all the Saints.   A man was looking for a good church to attend and he happened to enter one in which the congregation and the priest were reading form their prayer books.   They were saying, “We have left undone those things which we [Read more...]

THE WORLD FAIR OF RELIGIONS

My friend and I went to the fair. THE WORLD FAIR OF RELIGIONS. Not a trade fair. But the competition was as fierce, the propaganda loud.  At the Jewish stall we were given handouts that said that God was all-compassionate and the Jews were his Chosen People. The Jews, no other people were as chosen as they.  At the Muslim stall we learned that God was all-merciful and Mohammed is his only Prophet. Salvation comes from listening to God’s Prophet.  At the Christian stall we discovered that God is [Read more...]

To Really Know

A dialogue between a recent convert and an unbelieving friend:  “So, you have been converted to Christ?”  “Yes.”  “Then you must know a great deal about him. Tell me; What country was he born in?”  “I don’t know.”  “How many sermons did he preach?” “I don’t know.”  “You certainly know very little for a man who claims to be converted to Christ!”  “You are right. I am ashamed at how little I know about him. But this much I do know; Three years ago I was a drunkard. I was in debt. My family was [Read more...]

Thanks & Yes

What does it mean to love God? One does not love him the way one loves the people one sees and hears and touches, for God is not a person in our sense of the word. He is the Unknown. He is the wholly Other. He is above terms like he and she, person and thing.   When we say an audience fills the hall and a singer’s voice fills the hall, we use the same word to refer to two totally distinct realities. When we say we love God with our whole heart and we love our friend with our whole heart, we also [Read more...]

Search for God

What are the Saints? Perhaps this silly little story may help to answer that question: A neighbour found Gerald on hands and knees. “What are you searching for, Jones?” “My key.” Both men got on their knees to search. After a while the neighbour said, “Where did you lose it?” “At home.” “Goodness gracious! Then why are you searching here?” “Because it is brighter here.”   Perhaps the Saints are only people who searched for God where they lost him. Where do you search for Him? Love in my Master’s [Read more...]
